Ashkan Sanei

Born in 1984 in Urumieh, Ashkan Sanei’s aesthetics is based on themes of destruction and repetition. When it comes to working, similar to that of a pendulum, he swings between creation and destruction. He believes that drawing, as an untainted media, maintains the minimum gap to the artist’s mind and provides him with the opportunity to experiment. The fragility and vulnerability of paper and his choice of medium allows him to leave traces behind rather than specific objects; reminiscing rather than directly indicating. In his practice, there is a tangible connection between the subject and the material.

Inspired by poetry and geometry, he’s connected to the visual traditions and literary culture of his homeland, Iran. In his different collections, he essentially rewrites what’s already been said and done a hundred of times before in his own contemporary language.

Ashkan Sanei currently lives and works in Tehran and he has participated in many solo and group exhibitions since 2007 and his works are part of several prominent private collections.

Ashkan Sanei is an exceptional artist whose work seamlessly blends destruction and creation, with an aesthetic that speaks to both memory and transformation. His exploration of poetry, geometry, and personal history renders his art deeply poetic and universally resonant. Sanei’s pieces transcend mere visuals, capturing fleeting moments in time, blending textures, marks, and materials into profound statements about existence, memory, and the human experience. His works offer more than just an image; they invite viewers to enter a space where the past and present intertwine, creating an emotional and intellectual connection.
